In the fall of 2006, when I first started this blog, I then quickly realized the convenience of sharing images of studio work within such a public situation. Hence, a visual journal of my studio endured here for five years or so.
Sometime in 2011, however, the unwieldiness of the visual record (a lot of work was made and documented) and the linear limitations of the weblog format itself further constrained the best way, in my opinion, to share my work (work that seems to operate in defiance of such singular readings). So, I developed a website, proper, (www.justinlowman.com) in order to better share aspects of my work.
I am a visual artist focused on the ethereal/material conditions of place---a specific site and its immediate environment. I attempt to frame situations that reveal how ones own perception of time, place, and self are engaged as a complex of both phenomenological and structural concerns. My work employs the relationships between light, surface, and color as factors of duration and the specific qualities of a place. Such site-driven works result in temporary installations and/or related interdimensional objects. I received my MFA in Graduate Art from Art Center College of Design in December of 2009 and my BAs in Art History and Classical Humanities from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in May 1996. Since '96 (upon moving to Los Angeles), I have expanded my interests in art and music through painting, video, sculpture, installation, and group-oriented musical projects.
